What 5 Qualifications You Should Look for in a Road Construction Contractor

road construction company VirginiaRoad construction projects are complex processes that typically demand large amounts of money, time and resources. It’s crucial to select the best possible team for the job to make sure that time and money are being used as efficiently as possible, and that the end result will be high quality and long-lasting.

When it comes to selecting a road construction contractor, there are several key characteristics that separate the great companies from the rest. Here is a quick checklist to help guide your RFP development and prequalification process.

1. Proven History of Quality Work

Perhaps the most important criteria: has the road construction company completed other similar projects, and does the quality of those projects meet your expectations?

  • Has the road construction company completed other similar projects?
  • Did they come in within budget and on time?
  • Were the completed results satisfactory?
  • How well has the completed project stood up to the tests of time and heavy use?

ACTION: Request that potential road construction contractors submit a history of similar projects, along with photography of the completed work and contact information for each project’s client.

2. Safety Record

Every construction company can (and should) be assessed based on their safety record. In addition to OSHA requirements and procedures, this should also include a review of the company’s insurance records and coverage.

  • What is the company’s safety record?
  • Have they had any significant accidents or violations in the last 5 years?
  • Do they have sufficient insurance coverage for your project, and is their record in good standing?
  • Does the company have a safety program that is ingrained in their business culture?

ACTION: Request that the road construction contractors submit their safety record as well as comprehensive documentation of their insurance coverage.

3. The Right Expertise

Road construction companies can be experienced in a wide range of project types, and can possess a variety of specific skills. While the expertise that is right for your project will depend on the project scope, geography, and goals, there are several categories of expertise that should be addressed up front.

  • Does the road construction company have experience with grading and knowledge of drainage?
  • Is the company familiar with the local soil conditions?
  • Can the company provide recommendations and options for different kinds of asphalt (or other road surfacing materials)?

  • Does the company provide ongoing training for its staff?

ACTION: Ask the road construction company to walk you through its unique skills and expertise, and how it will benefit your specific project.

4. The Right Equipment for the Job

Having the right equipment is integral to any company’s ability to do its job.

  • Does the road construction company own the necessary equipment for your project?
  • Is the equipment well maintained and fully functional?

ACTION: Request that the road construction contractor provide a list of equipment that will be required for your project, along with a maintenance schedule.

5. Industry Reputation (including Relationships with Builders, Local Regulatory Boards and Other Contractors)

Success is largely determined by how well a construction team works together. The reputation of each contractor is crucial in building a functional project team that is capable of communicating and coordinating efforts.

It can be helpful to consider how a road construction company is viewed by:

  • Local builders
  • Local contractors and subcontractors
  • Regulatory bodies

ACTION: Request that the road construction company include a list of industry references in addition to client references, including contact information.
