Our Team
C. Derek Patterson, P.E.
President
Derek has led Basic since 2005 and is personally involved in all aspects of the company including sales, estimating, and operations. Since joining Basic Construction in 1984, Derek has served as superintendent, project manager, manager of site and asphalt divisions, vice-president of operations, and president. In 2012, along with Lawrence Myers, Derek planned, structured, and oversaw a successful offer and acquisition of Basic Construction by the employees.
As a partner with English Construction Company, Derek helped lead a successful contract negotiation with APM Terminals by using value engineering solutions for the asphalt paving at the Maersk Marine Terminal in Portsmouth. The $20 million paving project was the largest asphalt paving project ever undertaken by Basic and was completed on time and on budget over a period of eighteen months.
Derek holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute. He is licensed as a Professional Engineer in Virginia since 1989. Derek is a past President of the Peninsula Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) and member of the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA).
Lawrence O. Myers, CPA
Vice President-Finance
Prior to working for Basic, Lawrence was a manager at a "Big Four" CPA firm with audit responsibility for engagements in the construction, television and banking fields. Lawrence has led the financial operations of Basic Construction for over 11 years. In 2012, along with Derek Patterson, Lawrence planned, structured and oversaw the successful offer and acquisition of the company by the employees. Lawrence has a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Old Dominion University, a MBA from the College of Willliam and Mary, and is a Member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Kevin M. Morello
Site & Utility Manager
Kevin has been managing projects for Basic Construction since 1994. Kevin is responsible for the coordination and management of large complex projects-both public and private-for Basic Construction including utility, site, and asphalt divisions as well as subcontract management. Kevin has worked successfully with VDOT and most of the municipalities and general contractors in the Tidewater region constructing new infrastructure as well as rehabilitating existing infrastructure. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute, and is also a certified VDOT Erosion and Sediment Control Contractor/Division of Mineral Mining, Department of Conservation Responsible Land Disturber, and VDOT Work Zone Traffic Control.
Joe Link
Project Manager
Joe has been with Basic Construction since 2000. With 26 years of project management experience in roadway and site work construction, Joe has overseen numerous projects both large and small. Joe has been involved in highway, subdivision, landfill, big box retail, and airport construction. Joe holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute.
Lisa Williams
Estimator
Lisa has been with Basic Construction since 1991. She is the initial point of contact for the estimating department. Prior to her time at Basic, Lisa's experience includes working with commercial, residential building and remodeling general contractors. She works with all types of clients, including individuals, general contractors, and public works' officials to gather all of the information needed to complete an accurate price proposal for the client's needs. She is a graduate of Virginia Tech and has taken course work in drafting, construction, and estimating.
Robert E. Saunders
Asphalt Sales & Plant Manager
Robbie started his career in the asphalt industry in 1975 at Virginia’s first drum mix plant in James City County. His job functions there evolved over time and included laborer, equipment operator, plant operator and yard supervisor. Robbie joined the Basic Construction team in 1993 and within a year became the plant manager overseeing daily operations. Robbie currently assists customers with selection, application and pricing for all materials, deliveries, asphalt plant production and scheduling.
